Solar Lease
Electronics June 24th, 2008One excuse for people not putting up solar cells on their roof is the expense. Who has 14 to 30 thousand dollars free right now? Not many people. When the price of solar systems go down, then people will be able to afford them. Unless there is a different way to go solar.
On June 24, 2008, it was announced that in Phoenix, SolarCity will begin leasing solar systems. This is great news. Instead of buying a unit, you lease it for $85 a month for 15 years ($1,020 a year, $15,300 for the full life of the lease). At the end of the lease, you give it back, upgrade it, or buy it. Your electric bill goes down by a certain percentage and you will save on the electric bill – in other words, the system should pay for itself from the start. It would also have to be worthwhile to do – it shouldn’t just save me $85 a month from the power company, because then I am just sending the money to SolarCity. It needs to do more than that, like drop my electric bill to near zero dollars out of pocket. This is something that I am going to consider. I have always wanted to buy a solar system, but prices have always put it out of my budget. Would this be something you would be interested in?
