When the Internet Goes Down…
Electronics September 4th, 2008Our office phones were down the other day. Not really a bad thing for me since I don’t use it that often. It is just that our phones are VoIP - in other words, Internet phones. When they are down, it usually means that the Internet is down. I do some work on the Internet so this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Except that our LAN is down as well. This makes for an interesting morning as I have none of my work stored on my PC’s hard drive - it is all on a “common” drive. So, pretty much any work I have to do or could do, is next to impossible because I can’t access the files, answer the emails, research on the web, take care of NetWorks Digital Library… This got me thinking about my friends’ iPhones. If I had an iPhone, would I be able to continue to do my work? I couldn’t access the LAN but I still could take care of NetWorks Digital Library. I could still do my email and if I had documents stored on Google Docs, I could access them. There are many options there. How long is it before we are not tied down to a desk but to the cloud of cloud computing?

Gordon, knowing that you are a heavy user of the iPhone - do you find yourself doing work while away from the desk by using mobile Google docs or other tools?

Or you could have just asked your network admin for any of the documents you needed…
