Electronic Communications Boom in AZ
Misc. June 1st, 2009I read an article the other day in the Phoenix Business Journal titled Electronic Communications Boom in AZ.
The point was no surprise – that “from texting and e-mail to Twitter, social media is moving to the masses in Arizona.”
Being raised with an extensive self defense/martial arts background, I have been very leery and resistant to post too much personal information on the web through social networking sites like My Space and FaceBook. Call me paranoid – but when they first came out I thought they were “a stalker’s dream come true”. Well I’ve finally given in to peer pressure, (or boss pressure,) and joined ”the masses” by creating my first FaceBook account. I’m willing to learn, and open to any advice that you may have, as I delve deeper into this new world.
Getting back to the article…it included an April poll of Arizona residents that produced the statistics below. My thoughts are in italics. What are your comments and how do you think these stats compare to your state?· Cell phones a staple of everyday life with 88% of respondents using the devices – My 6-year-old step-son wanted/got a cell phone for Christmas this year - I’m surprised this number isn’t 98%! · 52% said they also sent text messages – I think this number should be higher too – I’d guess that 52% send text messages while driving! · 24% use their cell phones to check e-mail, despite the added premium for Internet service – My phone is not fancy enough, my eyes are not good enough, and my emails aren’t important enough! · Men are significantly more likely than women to report checking e-mail via cell phone on a daily basis – They just like to show off their fancy phones and feel important!
· Respondents under age 30 were significantly more likely than those over 30 to visit MySpace on a daily or weekly basis – No surprise. · Women were slightly more likely than men to report frequenting FaceBook on a regular basis – Maybe that’s because women like to “browse” while men like to “buy”.Lara Smith

Twitter Your Way to Getting Robbed

Thanks for sharing Mike. My husband was telling me about this service they have here in Phoenix. There is a company that will release venomous snakes in your house when you are on vacation to scare away (or kill?) would-be robbers. Then they come back and collect all the snakes before you return home. So maybe if I ever start Tweeting & go on vacation - I will be sure to Tweet about that!

When I was out of town, I did not publicly post that I was gone - this was done purely as a safety precaution for the wife and kids. Then again, I am not an avid twitter. Maybe if I was, I would have had no thoughts about putting that I was out of town. Though, in thinking about it, I probably would have put something like, “playing with atomic force microscope…”.
